Buttons
We used to artist’s work for the environments in the game: Galileo and Jan Both. To add a unique element to the game I decided to match the aesthetic of the buttons to the style of the artists chosen. As such the top row of buttons is drawn in a painterly style with light yellows and blues that paired well with Galileo’s color palette. The bottom row of buttons was drawn to mimic Jan Both’s scratchy ink drawings. We found that players responded best to these and were more immersed in the levels.
Button Iterations
As you can see here, I initially experimented with various shapes before deciding to shape each button like a cat’s face to signal that, if clicked, an action would occur for the cat.
The buttons on the right (normal and click states) were made a little further along in development. The buttons initially had a “gummier” or more mobile-game style look to fit in with some of the National Gallery of Art’s other mobile games before we decided matching the style to the artworks would further immersion and match the game’s themes better.
Pause Menu
Similar to the buttons, the initial iteration on the right had a modern, mobile game look to them while the final iteration was toned down and given texture and paint splotches to embrace the messiness of traditional art.
